Popup Dropper — now with 400% more droppinness!
First off — the PUD now lives in the KDE Subversion repository! It’s at svn://anonsvn.kde.org/home/kde/trunk/playground/libs/popupdropper — it builds with CMake and acts as a standalone library. Included in there is a testapp that you can build with qmake that I use for my testing and that you can use to check it out, which I encourage. Amarok now uses the PUD pulled in as a svn:external, which means Amarok is now very easily synced with updates I make to the PUD.
Now, on to the subject line — the PUD now contains an average of 400% more droppiness. That’s because you can now drop on the text of an item instead of just the icon, which means a far larger drop target (and apparently this is how people expected it to behave in the first place).
Next on the agenda is to have text change color on hover so you’re sure of what you’re dropping onto. Complete with a nice looking fade, of course…

Thanks for fixing this Jeff, as I first reported this usability problem in #amarok, where the drops would disappear if landing on the text. I initially thought that the dropper was simply broken as I didn’t think to drop it on the icons themselves. This is community feedback in action
Cheers
I like these news. I am using the daily builds (it is awesome). Dropping only in the icon was not the target I expected (I had to try a couple of times until I understood).
I agree the comment of a previous poster, in which he pointed out that some visual feedback to know how large the active zone is, would be useful.
I yet have to see how this is implemented in amarok, but you guys are amazing, in any case
Sam for me!
I thought it was broken too – I expected there would be a square around text and icon functioning as a dropdown area. I certainly would find it intuitive to have an indication that acts likewise.
Otherwise -> Good job all of you! Thanks a lot!!
100% agree. The text as target was something due, now it’s just missing some more prominent visual feedback (highlighting of the target, for example) and it’s almost perfect. By the way it’s a great UI addition, it enhances discoverability, though usability and I think it could be useful in more applications (Kmail for example… imagine that when I drag’n'drop a message, the preview pane get overlayed by a giant popup dropper with “reply”, “forward”, “forward as attachment” “delete”. It would be wonderful!)
