Rescanning Single Folders

Quite often -- or at least, "often enough" -- we get people that want to rescan a particular folder in Amarok. This is usually the result of them changing tags and wanting Amarok to pick it up. (Remember, for efficiency reasons Amarok watches the modified times of the collection directories, not the collection files, so adding or deleting (or renaming) files will trigger an incremental scan but modifying a file's contents won't.)

Previously, our advice was "touch the folder" or in the worst case "just do a full rescan." Now there's slightly better advice we can give. If you right-click on a folder in the collection setup dialog, and if the folder was already in your collection (i.e. you didn't just check it a moment ago), it will give you the option to rescan that folder.

The text above that field has also been modified slightly to indicate that this is possible. Check it out:

Rescanning a Single Folder

This is in current git master and will be in the 2.2.3 release!

  1. is there a space missing in the new text above ?

    “individuallyrescan”

Congratulations, make sure this makes the release notes for 2.2.3

  2. I really apprechiate this option but perhabs it is possible to make this more prominent in the UI. Why not enabling a new “view” in the collection which follows the folder structure and introducing a button to scan the particular folder?

Another thing: I could need to make something like two Collections from one source. I.e. I have a directory with two subdirectories, Bens Music and Johns Music. What about the possibility of making two collections for each one. Perhabs Ben doesn’T want to see John’s Artist? In my particular case I have alot of electronic DJ’s n my collection that I do not want to see the whole time because they are too many. It would be handier to have a second collection.

What do you think? And shall I add this as a wishlist item to bugzilla?

  3. You need to add a space between ïndividually” and “rescan”.

  4. There seems to be a missing space in “inviduallyrescan”

  5. Can you consider moving the popup location so it isn’t obscuring the folder name of interest? One line lower would look much better.

  6. Is there a reason to label one of the buttons in that dialog “Fully Rescan Entire Collection” instead of “Rescan Entire Collection” (wouldn’t both phrases convey the same meaning)? Also, I think it might be best to write “Rescan selected folder(s)” in the menu instead of changing the text according to the selected directories.

  7. There seems to be a missing space in “inviduallyrescan”.
